Best Church Wedding Venues in Nairobi (Updated 2026)

You have the date. You have the person. Now you need the church — and that is where the planning gets genuinely complicated.

Church weddings in Kenya come with requirements that nobody walks you through until you are already six months out and scrambling. Membership requirements, pre-marital counselling timelines that span months, banns publication periods, documentation lists, and booking procedures that vary entirely by denomination. Miss one requirement and your date is gone.

This updated 2026 guide covers Nairobi’s most sought-after wedding churches, organised by denomination. For each one, you will find the requirements, capacity, estimated costs where available, what makes it architecturally and spiritually significant, and what to expect when you walk into the parish office. At the end, there is a section on Kenya’s legal marriage requirements — the paperwork that applies regardless of which church you choose.

Before you settle on a church, make sure you have read the full guide to church wedding requirements in Kenya and our guide to planning a church wedding step by step.

What Every Couple Should Know Before Booking a Church

There are three things common to virtually every Christian church wedding in Kenya, regardless of denomination.

The 21-day banns requirement. Under the Marriage Act, 2014, notice of an intended marriage must be published for at least 21 days. In practice, this happens simultaneously at the church (banns are announced on Sunday services) and at the Registrar of Marriages. You cannot get married in a church without completing this process.

Pre-marital counselling is mandatory. Every mainline denomination requires it. Catholic churches typically require a course starting six months before the wedding. Anglican and Presbyterian churches typically run 10-week programmes. Non-denominational churches like Nairobi Chapel have structured programmes with clear enrolment dates. Plan your timeline around your counselling enrolment deadline, not around your wedding date.

Membership or membership connection matters. Most churches require at least one partner to be a confirmed or active member. The more prestigious the church, the more strictly this is enforced. If you are not a member of the church where you want to marry, contact the parish office early — some will accommodate non-members with pastoral recommendation, others will not.

With those foundations in place, here is what you need to know about each church.

Catholic Churches

Catholic weddings in Kenya follow the guidelines of the Archdiocese of Nairobi. The process is comprehensive: baptism and confirmation certificates are required, marriage preparation courses run for months, and divorced Catholics require a Church annulment before remarrying. Contact any Catholic parish at least six to twelve months before your intended wedding date.

Holy Family Basilica

Location: City Hall Way, Nairobi CBD Capacity: Very large — basilica-scale, multiple weddings per weekend Denomination: Roman Catholic Estimated venue hire: Contact parish office; fees apply for the hall and grounds hire for receptions

Holy Family Basilica is Kenya’s most prominent Catholic church and the first choice for many Catholic couples who want a wedding with genuine grandeur. The interior is extraordinary — soaring ceilings, ornate altar, intricate artwork, and the weight of decades of Nairobi’s Catholic history. The spacious courtyard provides a natural gathering point for guests after the ceremony and one of the better photo backdrops in the CBD.

Requirements:

  • At least the Catholic party must be baptised and confirmed Catholic
  • Marriage preparation course — enrol at least six months before the wedding date
  • Banns published for 21 days
  • Required documents: baptism certificate, confirmation certificate, pre-nuptial investigation form
  • Divorced Catholics require Church annulment before a new marriage can be celebrated

Practical notes: This is one of the most in-demand wedding venues in Kenya. Booking one year in advance is not an exaggeration — for December and January dates, even longer. CBD parking is a challenge; factor this into your logistics and communicate transport options to your guests. The basilica’s prestige means that standards are strictly maintained. Arrive at your parish meetings prepared and on time.

Consolata Shrine

Location: Waiyaki Way, Westlands, Nairobi Capacity: Large Denomination: Roman Catholic (Consolata Missionaries)

Consolata Shrine carries a depth of history that sets it apart from other Catholic churches in Nairobi. Founded by the Consolata Missionaries, who arrived in Kenya in 1902, it is among the oldest Catholic missions in East Africa. Its shrine status gives it a spiritual significance that many devout Catholic families prize.

Westlands is also a practical advantage over CBD churches: parking is more manageable, the surrounding area is more navigable, and the atmosphere is slightly less chaotic than City Hall Way.

Requirements:

  • Standard Archdiocese of Nairobi Catholic marriage requirements
  • Baptism and confirmation certificates
  • Marriage preparation course (enrol at least six months before)
  • 21-day banns

Practical notes: The shrine’s specialist character means the community there is tightly knit. Couples who are active in the Consolata community will find the process smoother. If you have no prior connection, be prepared to demonstrate engagement with the parish before the wedding date.

Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Kileleshwa

Location: Nyeri Road, Kileleshwa, Nairobi Capacity: Medium — approximately 300 guests Denomination: Roman Catholic

For Catholic couples who want a church wedding without the intensity and logistics of a CBD cathedral, Holy Trinity in Kileleshwa is worth serious consideration. The residential neighbourhood setting creates a quieter, more intimate atmosphere. Parking is considerably better than CBD options. The community feel of a neighbourhood parish is part of its appeal — a wedding here feels personal rather than institutional.

The requirements are standard for the Archdiocese of Nairobi; the main differentiator is the setting and scale.

St Francis Xavier Catholic Church

Location: Downtown Nairobi CBD Capacity: Large Denomination: Roman Catholic

St Francis Xavier is known among Nairobi’s Catholic community for its interior — high ceilings, ornate decorations, and an altar that photographs exceptionally well. Despite a CBD location, the interior creates a sense of serene remove from the city outside. If architectural drama in a Catholic setting is what you are after, this church delivers it.

Requirements follow the full Catholic marriage preparation process; contact the parish directly for wedding bookings and timeline guidance.

St Paul’s Catholic Chapel

Location: State House Road, Nairobi (University of Nairobi campus) Capacity: Medium Denomination: Roman Catholic Contact: +254 20 2724067

St Paul’s Chapel began as a university chaplaincy and grew into a full parish. That origin gives it a different character from the major cathedrals — more community-oriented, less formal in feel, while still conducting weddings with all proper Catholic requirements. Couples who attended the University of Nairobi or have a connection to the university community often feel at home here.

St Peter Claver Catholic Church, Eastleigh

Location: Eastleigh, Nairobi Capacity: Large Denomination: Roman Catholic

St Peter Claver serves one of Nairobi’s most densely populated areas and has a long history of celebrating community milestones, including weddings. The church is a popular choice for Catholic families in the Eastleigh and Pangani areas. The parish office is active and approachable; contact them early to understand the intake process for marriage preparation.

Anglican (ACK) Churches

Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) weddings require at least one partner to be a confirmed Anglican. The Marriage Outreach Ministry (MOM) model, common in major ACK churches, provides structured pre-marital counselling typically organised quarterly. Banns are published on three consecutive Sundays, covering the 21-day legal requirement.

All Saints’ Cathedral

Location: Corner of Kenyatta Avenue and Parliament Road, Nairobi CBD Capacity: Large — cathedral-scale, up to 1,000 guests in the nave Denomination: Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) Estimated costs: Contact the cathedral’s bookings office; a separate reception hall is available for hire on the grounds

All Saints’ Cathedral is one of Nairobi’s true landmarks. The Gothic architecture, soaring nave, and stunning stained glass windows create a ceremony space with genuine gravitas. Photographs taken inside the cathedral have a quality that is difficult to replicate — the light, the scale, the history all combine. The church is one of the oldest Anglican congregations in East Africa, and walking down that aisle carries the weight of that history.

The cathedral’s Marriage Outreach Ministry (MOM) runs pre-marital counselling classes every quarter — typically a 10-week programme. There is also an on-site hall that can host the reception, which means some couples manage the entire wedding day without leaving the cathedral grounds.

Requirements:

  • At least one partner must be a confirmed Anglican (ACK)
  • 21-day notice / banns published on three consecutive Sundays
  • Pre-marital counselling — enrol in the quarterly MOM programme well ahead of your date
  • Licensed ACK minister to officiate
  • Marriage registration with the Registrar of Marriages within seven days of the ceremony

Practical notes: The cathedral’s prominence means it is heavily booked. Approach the parish office as early as possible — at minimum six months out, ideally a year for popular dates. CBD traffic and parking are genuine challenges; consider coordinating shuttle transport for guests. The ACK membership requirement is enforced; if neither partner is a confirmed Anglican, this venue may not be accessible.

ACK St John’s Church, Pumwani

Location: Pumwani, Nairobi Capacity: Medium Denomination: Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK)

ACK St John’s Pumwani is a well-established community parish with a long history of serving the Pumwani area. For ACK couples in Nairobi East or those who prefer a neighbourhood parish over a CBD cathedral, St John’s is a dignified and accessible option. The standard ACK marriage requirements apply.

ACK All Saints’ Karen

Location: Karen, Nairobi Capacity: Medium-large Denomination: Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK)

The Karen campus offers a quieter, greener setting than the CBD cathedral — mature trees, ample parking, and the relaxed pace of the Karen suburb. For ACK couples based in the south-western suburbs, this is worth exploring before defaulting to the CBD option. Contact the parish office for wedding enquiries.

Presbyterian (PCEA) Churches

The Presbyterian Church of East Africa runs a Pastoral Care programme that includes pre-marital counselling. Active PCEA membership for at least one partner is the standard expectation. Like other mainline denominations, PCEA requires the 21-day banns publication.

PCEA St Andrew’s Church

Location: Corner of Nyerere Road and Statehouse Road, Nairobi CBD Capacity: Large — cathedral-scale, up to 800 guests Denomination: Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) Contact: +254 707 257 000 | [email protected]

St Andrew’s is among the most historically significant churches in Kenya. The building was completed in 1910, making it one of Nairobi’s oldest standing structures, and its Gothic architecture is striking even by the standards of churches built in that era. The church has its roots in the Church of Scotland Mission, established in 1891, and US President Theodore Roosevelt contributed to its construction during his 1909 visit to Kenya.

It serves as the de facto PCEA headquarters in Kenya, which lends it institutional prestige within the Presbyterian community. The Statehouse Road setting also provides a more parklike surrounding than some CBD churches — mature trees and a quieter street add to the atmosphere.

Requirements:

  • Active PCEA membership for at least one partner (strongly preferred)
  • Pre-marital counselling through PCEA’s Pastoral Care programme
  • 21-day banns published on three consecutive Sundays
  • Contact the church registrar well in advance to understand the current intake process

Practical notes: The gothic interior photographs beautifully, and the historical significance makes this a meaningful setting for PCEA-connected couples. As with All Saints, CBD parking requires planning. Approach the church registrar early — the combination of historical significance and limited Saturday slots makes this a competitive booking.

PCEA Nairobi Central Parish

Location: Nairobi CBD Capacity: Large Denomination: Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA)

PCEA Nairobi Central is the regional hub for PCEA activity in the city. Active members of the Nairobi Central Parish can expect a well-organised wedding process through the church’s Pastoral Care department. Contact the parish office for the current wedding enquiry procedure and pre-marital counselling intake dates.

Evangelical Churches

Evangelical churches in Kenya, particularly CITAM branches, offer a blend of contemporary atmosphere with organised wedding support structures. Membership connection is preferred but the process is generally more accessible than Catholic or mainline Anglican requirements.

CITAM Valley Road

Location: Valley Road, Nairobi Capacity: Large — modern auditorium seating 1,200+ Denomination: Evangelical (Christ Is The Answer Ministries) Contact: +254 733 520 596 | [email protected]

CITAM Valley Road is a popular choice for couples who want a contemporary evangelical ceremony in a well-equipped, modern venue. The sanctuary features high ceilings and stained glass that give it a more traditional aesthetic than typical modern evangelical buildings — it bridges the gap between classic church atmosphere and contemporary worship style.

The church has a well-organised weddings ministry and a spacious reception hall for post-ceremony celebrations. Multiple CITAM branches across Nairobi (also in Karen, Woodley, Thika Road, and other locations) mean that if Valley Road does not suit your location, another branch may.

Requirements:

  • At least one partner should be an active CITAM member
  • Pre-marital counselling — mandatory, contact the church’s marriage ministry to register
  • 21-day banns publication
  • Licensed CITAM pastor to officiate

Practical notes: CITAM’s multiple branches is a practical advantage — if one branch is fully booked for your date, enquire at others. The Valley Road campus is centrally located and parking is reasonable by Nairobi standards.

Non-Denominational Churches

Non-denominational churches are the most accessible option for couples who are Christian but not affiliated with a specific mainline denomination, or for couples where the partners come from different denominational backgrounds.

Nairobi Chapel (Ngong Road)

Location: Ngong Road, Nairobi (also Karen campus) Capacity: Large Denomination: Non-denominational / Evangelical

Nairobi Chapel is one of the most accessible church wedding options in Nairobi for non-members. The church’s Marriage Ministry is structured and transparent — they publish their marriage banns process and pre-marital counselling requirements clearly, which is genuinely useful when you are trying to plan a timeline.

The 10-week pre-marital counselling programme runs on a scheduled intake basis, so couples need to track enrolment dates rather than simply booking a counselling session when convenient. Multiple Nairobi Chapel branches (including a Karen campus) provide flexibility on location.

Requirements:

  • Marriage banns published as per the Marriage Ministry process
  • Pre-marital counselling — mandatory, enrol in the next available programme
  • Registration through the church’s marriage ministry
  • The non-denominational stance means the membership bar is lower than mainline churches, but pastoral connection is still expected

Nairobi Baptist Church

Location: Westlands, Nairobi (main campus; also Parklands) Capacity: Very large — modern auditorium seating 1,000+ Denomination: Baptist

Nairobi Baptist offers a vibrant, contemporary ceremony atmosphere with state-of-the-art sound and lighting in its main auditorium. The church also has a garden on-site — a practical advantage for couples who want wedding photos without leaving the venue. The active family and youth ministry gives the church a lively community feel that translates into a warm atmosphere at weddings.

Requirements:

  • Membership or pastoral recommendation required
  • Pre-marital counselling
  • 21-day banns
  • Booking with church administration

Mavuno Church (Nairobi South)

Location: Mulolongo, Nairobi South (also Lang’ata and CBD campuses) Capacity: Large — main auditorium Denomination: Non-denominational / Contemporary Evangelical

Mavuno has grown rapidly to become one of Nairobi’s most influential evangelical churches. Its contemporary worship style and multiple campuses make it a practical option for couples across the city. The church has a structured marriage preparation programme. Contact the specific campus where you worship (or where you wish to marry) for current wedding enquiry procedures.

Regardless of denomination, every church wedding in Kenya must satisfy the legal requirements under the Marriage Act, 2014, administered through the Office of the Attorney General.

Minimum age: Both parties must be 18 years or older.

Notice to Registrar: A notice of intended marriage must be submitted to the Registrar of Marriages. This is separate from the church banns process, though they often run concurrently. The Registrar publishes the notice for 21 days.

Documents required:

  • National ID card or passport (both parties)
  • Baptism or confirmation certificate (required by most churches, not by the AG’s office)
  • Certificate of Marriage Notification from the AG’s office
  • For widowed persons: death certificate of previous spouse
  • For divorced persons: decree absolute (and, for Catholic weddings, Church annulment)

Licensed officiant: The minister officiating must be licensed under the Marriage Act. Most ordained ministers at mainline churches hold this licence; confirm this if you are using a pastor from outside the church building.

Registration after the wedding: The signed marriage certificate must be filed with the Registrar of Marriages within seven days of the ceremony. The officiating minister typically handles this; confirm the process with your church in advance.

How Far in Advance Should You Book?

The answer depends on the church and the date.

Holy Family Basilica and All Saints’ Cathedral: Twelve months minimum for popular dates (December, January, August). These are the most competitive bookings in Nairobi. Six months is the absolute minimum, and you may find your preferred date gone.

PCEA St Andrew’s and Consolata Shrine: Six to twelve months for popular dates. Six months is generally workable for less competitive months.

CITAM, Nairobi Baptist, Nairobi Chapel: Four to six months is typically sufficient, though December remains competitive across all churches. These venues also have multiple branches, which gives you more flexibility.

Smaller parish churches (Holy Trinity Kileleshwa, St Paul’s): Three to six months is usually adequate. The lower demand gives you more breathing room, though popular dates still fill up.

The counselling enrolment deadline is often the binding constraint, not the date itself. If a church runs its pre-marital counselling quarterly, you must enrol in the cohort that ends at least a month before your wedding. Missing the enrolment cutoff pushes you to the next cohort and potentially a later wedding date.

Questions to Ask When You Visit the Parish Office

Walking into a church office prepared separates couples who secure their date from couples who leave empty-handed. Bring these questions.

  1. Is our wedding date available?
  2. What are the membership or membership-connection requirements?
  3. When does the next pre-marital counselling intake begin?
  4. What documents do we need to submit, and by when?
  5. When will the banns be published, and for how many Sundays?
  6. Who is the officiating minister, and are they licensed under the Marriage Act?
  7. Is there a reception hall available, and what are the hire costs?
  8. What is the church’s policy on outside photographers and videographers?
  9. Can we have a rehearsal, and when?
  10. What is the booking deposit, and what is the cancellation policy?

A parish office that cannot answer these questions clearly is a warning sign. Established churches with active wedding ministries will have clear answers to all of them.

Choosing the Right Church for You

The right church for your wedding is not necessarily the most prestigious one — it is the one where your faith is authentically expressed and where the requirements fit your timeline and situation.

If you are a devout Catholic with time to prepare: Holy Family Basilica or Consolata Shrine offer unmatched prestige and spiritual significance within the Catholic tradition. Start the process a year out.

If you are Anglican and want an iconic venue: All Saints’ Cathedral is the obvious choice — enrol in the Marriage Outreach Ministry counselling programme as your first step. For a greener, quieter option, ACK All Saints’ Karen is worth visiting.

If you are Presbyterian or have PCEA roots: PCEA St Andrew’s combines historical gravitas with strong pastoral care. The gothic building and Statehouse Road setting are hard to match.

If you want contemporary evangelical atmosphere: CITAM Valley Road’s blend of modern facility and traditional stained glass hits a middle ground that many couples find ideal.

If you are from different denominations or want flexibility: Nairobi Chapel’s non-denominational stance and transparent marriage ministry process make it the most accessible option in Nairobi. Mavuno Church is another strong option, particularly for couples based south of the city.

If you want a quieter, more intimate Catholic wedding: Holy Trinity Kileleshwa offers the full Catholic ceremony in a residential parish setting, with better parking and a more personal atmosphere than the downtown cathedrals.

Once you have confirmed your church, the next step is finding and booking the rest of your vendors. Use the Harusi Hub vendor marketplace to browse photographers, caterers, decorators, and more — all in one place. If you are still thinking through the full picture of what a church wedding costs, read our breakdown of wedding costs in Kenya in 2026 and our guide to planning a church wedding end to end. For a full breakdown of every vendor cost, see the wedding vendor price list for Kenya 2026, and use our wedding budget guide to plan every line item before you start booking.

The wedding ceremony is one morning. The marriage lasts a lifetime. Choose the church where you feel you are genuinely being married — not just where you are putting on a ceremony.
