You said yes, the date is set, and your church feels like the only right place to get married. But between banns announcements, pre-marital counselling, government paperwork, and church-specific requirements — the process can feel like a second full-time job.

A church wedding in Kenya involves two parallel tracks: the government registration process through eCitizen and Sheria House, and the church’s own internal requirements. Both must be completed before your wedding day. Miss a step on either track, and you could find yourself unable to get legally married on your chosen date.

This guide covers what you need to know for the three most common denominations in Kenya — Catholic, PCEA (Presbyterian Church of East Africa), and Anglican (ACK). We also walk through the government requirements that apply to all Christian marriages.

For a full overview of the government process, read our complete guide on how to register your marriage in Kenya and our article on marriage license requirements.

A Christian marriage in Kenya is conducted by a licensed minister of faith in a church, under Christian rites, and is governed by the Marriage Act, 2014. The marriage is monogamous, fully legally binding, and recognised internationally.

There are two government routes:

Marriage by Notice (Standard) — You file a 21-day public notice, then solemnize within 90 days. This is the route most church couples follow.

Marriage by Special Licence — For couples marrying outside a licensed place of worship (e.g., garden or hotel venue), or when there is a valid reason to skip the waiting period.

Government Requirements: What Every Church Couple Needs

Regardless of denomination, you must complete these government steps before your church wedding.

Documents Required for eCitizen Application

Both partners need:

  • Copy of National ID or valid Passport
  • Copy of birth certificate (names must exactly match your ID — same names, same order)
  • One coloured passport-size photo each
  • Wedding invitation card
  • Serial number of the marriage book — obtain this from your church minister or the Registrar’s office
  • Copy of divorce decree absolute (if previously divorced)
  • Death certificate of former spouse (if widowed)
  • Sworn affidavit if your divorce decree or death certificate is more than two years old
  • Two witness IDs (your best couple)

The Government Process: Step by Step

  1. Log into eCitizen at e-citizen.go.ke and select “Christian Marriage Registration” under the Attorney General’s office
  2. Submit your application with all required documents
  3. Pay the notice fee of Ksh 600 on the platform
  4. Wait 21 days — the mandatory notice period during which objections can be lodged
  5. Book an interview at Sheria House in Nairobi — both partners must attend in person with all original documents
  6. Pay the certificate fee: Ksh 800 if your wedding is at a licensed place of worship, or Ksh 7,200 if at a non-licensed venue
  7. Collect your Registrar’s Certificate — this is the document your church needs to confirm your government clearance

Government Fees Summary

FeeAmount (KES)
Notice fee (eCitizen, on approval)600
Clearance certificate — licensed place of worship800
Clearance certificate — outside licensed venue (garden, hotel)7,200
Special licence — licensed venue7,200
Special licence — outside licensed venue14,200
Certified copy of marriage certificate1,100

Important: The venue on your government certificate must exactly match where your ceremony will take place. If you change venues, you must restart the government process from the beginning.

Church Banns: The Public Announcement

Across all denominations, your church will announce your intention to marry to the congregation — this is called the reading of banns. It typically happens over three consecutive Sundays, allowing anyone with a valid objection to come forward in writing.

Your minister conducts a preliminary investigation to confirm that one partner is a bona fide member of the church before the banns are read. Once all three announcements pass without objection, you receive a certificate of banns from the church.

Start the banns process at least 2 months before your wedding. Most churches book up fast, especially during peak wedding season (December, January, and around Easter).

Catholic Church Wedding Requirements in Kenya

The Catholic Church has the most structured pre-wedding process of any denomination in Kenya. Contact your parish priest 6–9 months before your wedding date — not 2 months, not 3. Six to nine months.

Pre-Marital Counselling (Pre-Cana)

Pre-Cana is a mandatory marriage preparation course for all couples marrying in the Catholic Church. It is not optional. The course is typically led by a priest or deacon, often with the support of a married Catholic couple, and covers:

  • Communication and conflict resolution
  • Family of origin and expectations
  • Financial planning as a couple
  • Intimacy and sexuality
  • Natural Family Planning (NFP)
  • Theology of the sacrament of marriage

Some parishes run weekend retreats; others run weekly evening sessions over several weeks. Ask your parish what format they offer and get on the list early.

Documents Required by the Catholic Church

  • Baptism certificate — must be dated within 6 months of the wedding date
  • Confirmation certificate (if applicable)
  • National IDs for both partners
  • Your government Registrar’s Certificate or Special Licence (the document from Sheria House)
  • Best couple IDs (the witnesses)
  • Parents’ consent forms signed by both sets of parents (some parishes require this)
  • Dispensation forms — required for mixed-faith marriages (Catholic marrying a non-Catholic)
  • Annulment decree or death certificate if either partner was previously married

For mixed-faith marriages (Catholic + non-Catholic), the Catholic spouse must obtain formal permission from the bishop. If the non-Catholic partner was not baptised at all, a Dispensation from Disparity of Worship form is required.

PCEA (Presbyterian Church of East Africa) Wedding Requirements

The Presbyterian Church of East Africa, founded by Scottish missionaries, maintains a composed and liturgical worship style. PCEA weddings follow a dignified, structured ceremony format.

What PCEA Requires

  • Active membership in the PCEA congregation — at least one partner should be a regular, registered member of the church
  • Pre-marital counselling sessions arranged through the church elder or minister
  • Banns read on three consecutive Sundays before the wedding
  • National IDs for both partners and witnesses
  • Government Registrar’s Certificate from Sheria House (or Special Licence)
  • Birth certificates with matching names
  • Previous marriage documents if applicable (divorce decree or death certificate)

The PCEA minister officiates the ceremony and records the marriage in the church’s marriage book. After the ceremony, the marriage record is submitted to the Registrar of Marriages.

Contact your PCEA church session (elder board) at least 3 months before your wedding to begin the process and confirm availability of your preferred date.

Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) Wedding Requirements

The Anglican Church of Kenya conducts weddings through ordained, licensed ministers — only clergy who are specifically authorised to officiate marriages can do so.

What ACK Requires

  • Baptism certificates for both partners (required in most ACK parishes)
  • Pre-marital counselling — conducted by the ACK minister or an assigned counsellor
  • Banns read on three consecutive Sundays
  • National IDs for both partners
  • Government Registrar’s Certificate from Sheria House
  • Best couple IDs (witnesses)
  • Previous marriage documents if applicable

ACK weddings often include a full liturgy from the Anglican Prayer Book. The format can be adapted to some degree, but speak with your minister early about what flexibility is available.

Contact your ACK parish at least 3–4 months before your intended date to confirm the minister’s schedule and begin pre-marital counselling.

Managing Multiple Events Alongside Your Church Wedding

Most Kenyan couples celebrate more than one event — a church ceremony, a reception, a ruracio or traditional ceremony, and sometimes a pre-wedding party. Keeping all of these organised in one place saves a lot of stress.

Harusi Hub’s event management feature lets you add each occasion separately, with its own date, venue, and guest RSVP settings. You can assign different budgets to each event and control which guests see invitations for which events. Guests can RSVP to individual events — ideal when your church ceremony is invite-only but your reception is open to a wider crowd.

Planning Your Church Wedding Checklist

The biggest mistake couples make with church weddings is starting too late. Here is a summary checklist:

Government track (start 3 months before):

  • Collect all documents (IDs, birth certificates, witness IDs)
  • Check name alignment across all documents
  • Apply on eCitizen and pay Ksh 600 notice fee
  • Complete 21-day notice period
  • Attend interview at Sheria House
  • Pay certificate fee (Ksh 800 for licensed venue)
  • Collect Registrar’s Certificate

Church track (start 6–9 months before for Catholic, 3–4 months for PCEA/ACK):

  • Contact minister and register for pre-marital counselling
  • Complete counselling course
  • Obtain baptism certificate (within 6 months of wedding for Catholic)
  • Request banns to be announced over three Sundays
  • Submit Registrar’s Certificate to the church
  • Pay church fees and confirm date

Use Harusi Hub’s wedding checklist tool to track all of this automatically. The checklist generates over 100 tasks across 15 categories — including a dedicated Legal & Registration category — and organises them by timeline so you always know what to focus on next.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a non-member get married in a church in Kenya? Most churches require at least one partner to be an active, registered member. Some may make exceptions — speak directly with the minister.

What if my wedding is not at a licensed church? If your church is not a licensed place of worship under the AG’s office, or if you want to have the ceremony outdoors or at another venue, you will need a Special Licence (Ksh 7,200–14,200).

How do I know if my church has a licensed marriage book? Ask your church minister or administrator directly. Licensed churches are issued marriage books by the Registrar of Marriages.

Can I register my church wedding online? The eCitizen notice and fee payment process is online. The interview at Sheria House is still in-person. Online services are currently available for Nairobi County.
